Werwolf was formed in 2005 near Freiburg (Baden-Württemberg) by Lupus and P. (formerly of Massengrab). Their debut EP, Proömium, was released in 2006, followed by the demo Schmerz in 2013. P. departed in 2016 for personal reasons. The 2017 EP Crucifix Desecration featured vocals by G.G.

In 2021, Werwolf released the EP Blutgericht with vocals by J.N., and a split with In Morte Sumus titled Malleus Maleficarum. Since then, Seuche has taken over vocal duties. The band continued with two 2023 splits: Gotteslästerung with Nachtmaar (Switzerland) and Endless Winter / Dort Wo Der Teufel Innewohnt with Opferblut (Switzerland).

In 2024, Werwolf released a demo featuring three unreleased tracks from 2007 and a split with Totensturm titled Tenderness For Jesus Christ. That same year, the lineup expanded with Nox (rhythm guitar), Bstrd (bass), and Mentor (drums) joining the band.
